Capcom won't be producing as many PlayStation 2 games going forward as it will PlayStation 3 games, president Haruhiro Tsujimoto says.
Speaking to Japan Corporate News Network, Tsujimoto said that the company will develop more games for PS3, even though the legacy market is still "attractive."
Tsujimoto pointed out that the company will pursue a multiplatform development strategy in order to maximize profits; the company's Devil May Cry 4 and Resident Evil 5 will be on PS3 and Xbox 360. Capcom also has a broad suite of Wii games in the works, although the article doesn't mention them.
Leading industry figures have called on Sony to drop the suggested retail price of PS2 as the console nears the final stages of its hugely successful lifecycle.
The system, which burst onto the market seven years ago, currently holds a suggested retail price point of around £95.
But publisher bosses have told MCV that a cut could entice more family purchases of the console – and its software – this Christmas.
“We’re pleased to see that PS2 has shown such longevity,” said Ubisoft UK MD Rob Cooper.
“It’s already at an attractive price, but a reduction on hardware and software would undoubtedly prove an extremely tempting purchase to the more casual gamer and family member.”
Atari UK MD Jeremy Wigmore added: “Considering all of the financial turmoil going around, anything that might galvanise the market is welcome. A PS2 cut would probably give it a little lift.”
And head of games at HMV Tim Ellis said: “Well-timed price drops, which help stimulate demand without devaluing the appeal of the product, are more often welcome than not. So we can understand why some publishers are suggesting one on PS2.”
However, Sony has ruled out the idea. SCEE UK MD Ray Maguire told MCV: “There are no immediate plans to cut the price. We still think PS2 offers tremendous value for money.
"And, with continued innovative software support from ourselves and our third-party publishing partners, we concur with the comments recently made in MCV about the longevity of the system.”
Arcana Heart is a 2D arcade fighting game developed by Examu (formerly Yuki Enterprise). The game features an original all-female cast, and after choosing a character the player chooses an "elemental alignment" which determines the character's special moves.
The console version of Arcana Heart allows players to choose between the "original" and "full" versions of the game, while also giving the option to pit "original" version characters against their "full" version counterparts. In addition to this, there is a Gallery Mode and a Story mode, complete with voiceovers.
After the popular doujin fighter Melty Blood: Act Cadenza, Arcana Heart is another nice edition to the genre. In stock today for PlayStation2™ at US$ 59.90 only. It's been revealed the version of Manhunt 2 that the British Board of Film Classification turned down earlier this week in the UK, is exactly the same as the revised edition that's been granted a mature rating by the ESRB in North America.
This revelation comes from UK trade magazine MCV during an interview with BBFC spokeswoman Sue Clark. She defends the board's decision saying that the organisation isn't any tougher on videogames than it is on movies. "Manhunt 2 is the second game we have rejected in 23 years. I'd hardly call that draconian," she said.
Clark also responded to Rockstar's criticisms that the decision was 'unacceptable' and that adults should be able to make decisions for themselves. "DVD companies don't complain when we reject their products. The creator of the Struggle In Bondage didn't get up in arms. Manhunt 2 went beyond our guidelines when it came to gross violence and we had a public duty to reject it," she added.
Rockstar must now wait to hear a decision from the Video Appeals Committee, which will decide whether or not the game can be released in the UK.

Sony will be dishing out its latest Bollywood inspired SingStar game in Europe on Friday.
It lets you pop on a saris and shuffle around to all sorts of catchy tunes, belting out phonetic English lyrics that appear on your karaoke screen, which is much easier than reading Hindi.
Bollywood is the part of Indian cinema made famous by its lavish colours, group dance routines, whistle-able songs and extraordinarily melodramatic storylines: expect love triangles, star-crossed romances, plot twists, corruption, baddies - it's like a whole series of Neighbours in one performance.
One of its current stars is Shilpa Shetty, the lady who fell victim of Jade Goody in Celebrity Big Brother the other year.
Sony's latest release for their PlayStation 2 console, Singstar Bollywood, is a karaoke-driven competitive game that promises to have fans singing along to hits from films like Rang De Basanti [Images], Salaam-E-Ishq [Images], Don and Guru, among others.
Previous installments of the popular Singstar franchise -- Singstar Rock Ballads got tremendous reviews -- featured not just a karaoke feature with a powerful scoring engine, but also a very intuitive interface and different levels of difficulty, designed to really challenge the wannabe-vocalist.

Jeetil Patel, analyst for Deutsche Bank, has claimed that the most successful console the world has ever seen, the PS2, could be finally approaching the end of its days following the publication of NPD’s September sales figures for the US.
GameDaily quotes Patel as saying: “PlayStation 2 software sales fell 47 per cent year-on-year to $85 million, representing a deceleration from the 33 per cent year-on-year decline last month.
While this substantial decline was inevitable, it is currently unclear whether the drop reflects consumer transition to next-gen software or weak spending patterns amongst the low-end consumer. Needless to say, with tougher comps ahead for PS2 software sales, we think that the PS2 may finally be on its way out of the industry for good.”
According to Take Two a former employee of Sony Europe has admitted to leaking out a beta test version of Mahunt 2 for the PS2 to allow the world of pirates the chance to try out the game.
The man is a former employee of Sony Europe only because he has since been fired since getting caught in the act.
Take Two did not reveal many details about the man or what had happened but they did state that the man has been let go from Sony Europe. There will likely be consequences as this could warrant a fine or even jail time since it is technically stealing.
The employee has stated that he knows that he is responsible for the unauthorized online distribution of the beta test version of Mahhunt 2 for the PAL PS2.
In all fairness though he may have just been trying to get the game out so people who it may be banned for still could play it.

Just when you thought the PlayStation 2 was dead and buried, another publisher comes along with a new title for the aging console. In this case its SouthPeak Games with futuristic racing title Iridium Runners, zooming to Europe in February, 2008.
It's not as hackneyed as it sounds though, this Iridium Runners: rather than diving behind the wheel of a snazzy speedster, you've got to dash on foot, collecting all manner of power-ups and over-the-top weapons. So, Mario Kart without the karts, basically.
Iridium Runners features several game modes, including a full championship, single race and a split-screen multiplayer. When racing with others, you can play a more traditional free-for-all race or take part in the team mode, which pits two groups of two players against each other.
Melanie Mroz, executive vice president of SouthPeak Games had this to say, of all things: "Iridium Runners is another example of the fun, distinctive and unique titles that we look to publish. The PlayStation 2 market is still thriving and Iridium Runners will represent great value for money, thanks in no small part to the team at Playstos."
Sony Computer Entertainment America is celebrating the seven-year anniversary of the launch of the PlayStation 2 computer entertainment system.
Since its release in North America on October 26, 2000, more than 120 million hardware units and more than a billion units of software for PlayStation 2 have been shipped worldwide, making it the best-selling gaming platform ever released.
The PS2 broke the record for the fastest game console to reach 100 million units shipped, accomplishing the feat within 5 years and 9 months from its launch. This was faster than its predecessor, the PlayStation, which took 9 years and 6 months to reach the same milestone.
In this current fiscal year, 30 million software titles for the PS2 have already been sold, and 10 million additional PS2 consoles are expected to be sold worldwide by the end of March 2008.
"Never before has an in-home game system experienced this type of worldwide success on such a long-lasting scale," said Peter Dille, SCEA's senior vice president of marketing and PlayStation network.
"PlayStation 2 is a perfect example of our ten year product lifecycle promise and is a testament to the design and technology that continues to be at the core of the product. While today's anniversary celebrates PlayStation 2' past, we’re very excited for its future."
SCEA is still committed to a 10-year product lifecycle for the console, with 160 new titles expected in North America throughout the holidays and by the end of March 2008. Currently, there are more than 1,400 titles in the PS2's software library.
The company plans to release a limited edition ceramic white PlayStation 2 bundled with SingStar Pop and two USB microphones in November for a suggested retail price of US 149.99.
Yes gentleman, girls really do play games, and proving also that they like nothing more than a good pluck, The Bliss Girls' Choice Game of the Year 2007 in this year's Golden Joysticks has gone to... Guitar Hero II.
The axe-wielding rhythm action game has head banged its way to a gong, leaving other contenders Sims 2 Pets, Cooking Mama, Crackdown and Rayman Raving Rabbids crying into their pints. Sorry guys, but there can only be one winner.
In2Games, the pioneering British developer of motion-based videogames and controllers, has today announced that its groundbreaking RealPlay range of PlayStation 2 wireless motion sensing games will be distributed throughout the UK by Pinnacle Software.
The first titles in the RealPlay will be released in the UK on November 30th 2007. Priced£34.99, each title comes with a unique controller which brings wire-free motion sensing to the PlayStation 2 for the first time.
<*>RealPlay Racing introduces a wireless steering wheel, which controls the on-screen action for this fast and furious racer. <*>RealPlay Pool comes complete with a replica pool cue, with which players can apply swerve and spin before actually hitting each shot. <*>RealPlay Golf’s wireless club tracks your swing to bring an on-course dimension into the game. <*>RealPlay PuzzleSphere comes with a unique‘sphere’ which players manipulate in real life in order to guide an on-screen replica through heart-in-mouth rollercoaster courses.
Two additional titles– RealPlay Bowling and RealPlay Tennis– are scheduled for release early in 2008.
“Pinnacle Software is the right partner for such a unique range of titles,” says Paul Rebhan. Sales Director, In2Games.“We needed a team who immediately bought into the concept and the opportunity at retail; but one which, more importantly,‘understood’ what we’re trying to do. These are games for the whole family to enjoy, and we need the right distribution partner to maximise our presence at retail.”
“Innovative, enjoyable and affordable– that’s the RealPlay range in three words, and we’re delighted to have won the contract to handle UK distribution,” says Peter Sleeman, MD, Pinnacle Software.“The PlayStation 2 format still boasts the largest installed base of any home console, and the RealPlay range extends its offering into the realms of next generation. Hardware and software at such an attractive price point should swell the tills of games retailers up and down the country.”
RealPlay Racing, RealPlay Golf, RealPlay Pool and RealPlay PuzzleSphere will be available exclusively on PlayStation 2 on November 30th 2007, priced£34.99.
The venerable PlayStation 2 just turned seven years old, and getting all dressed up for the occasion -- that hot Ceramic White slim PS2 Singstar bundle we saw a while back should be hitting stores this weekend, with availability everywhere by November 4, according to Sony's PlayStation Blog. The $150 bundle includes Singstar Pop, a matching white DualShock 2, and two microphones -- just the thing to spice up those holiday parties.
Our good pals over at tehskeen have provided more details about the hack to the recent Memory card released at Mr Modchips
Only a few days after the Memor32 a Playstation 2 memory card with a USB interface was released an anonymous group of hackers have released a "modchip" like BIOS for it allowing you to flash the memory card and use it like a normal modchip without even having to open up your Sony Playstation 2 and void it's warranty.
I had wondered why "scene" sites email accounts were getting spammed with product details for this "normal" looking memory card. I had also wondered what had happened to our favorite scene sites endorsed "vast" PS2 product. I also wonder who these "Russian" (can we think of similarities) hackers are and how they released a hacked BIOS for the card so quickly. Doesn't take a genius to add these things all up.
At any rate, with my insight aside it looks to be a pretty interesting product after all. Currently, there is only a PAL BIOS released with preliminary features, but we should probably expect a NTSC version soon. I wonder where those "freevast" people got off to

During last Friday's Wii LEGO Star Wars: The Complete Saga public unveiling at Nottingham Game City, Jonathan Smith, head of production at Traveller's Tales Games let slip a few tidbits of information regarding upcoming title LEGO Batman.
Having wowwed the crowds with a toy lightsaber taped to a Wiimote, Smith wrapped up proceedings with LEGO Indiana Jones trailer before turning his attention to the Dark Knight's LEGO debut, revealing that Batman villains Nighthawk and Man-Bat are among the denizens of Gotham City who'll make it into the game.
Sure, it's not much, but it seems there'll be plenty for LEGO fans to look forward to in the coming months and beyond.
