Worldwide PS2 shipment figures top 91 million

Posted By: wraggster

In a presentation at the PlayStation Meeting 2005 held in Toky, Sony Computer Entertainment has revealed that 91.62 million PS2 units have been shipped around the globe so far.

Of that total 37 million were sold to North America, while the figure for Europe stands at 33.21 million. The remaining 21.41 million units were sold in Japan and Asia.

North America also leads the way in the area of PS2 software sales, with more than 395 million of the 863 million games sold worldwide being purchased in the US and Canada. Figures for Europe and Japan and Asia stand at 292 million and 176 million respectively.

When the figures are combined, the total number of PSone and PS2 games sold is 1.822 billion - 767 million in North America, 594 million in PAL regions and 461 million in Japan and Asia. Both consoles are now available in more than 120 different countries and there are more than 7700 PSone and 5200 PS2 games for consumers to choose from.

SCE observed that the PlayStation demographic is changing in Japan - most of those buying the new slimline PS2 consoles are aged between 40-44, whereas most regular sized PS2 owners are 25-29. SCE also noted that there are more women buying consoles.

Of course, that doesn't necessarily mean that the older and female demographic are actually playing on the consoles they buy; it could be an indication that the platform has become more mass-market with the launch of the slimline model, to the point where a lot more parents are buying them for younger children.

The Japanese giant then took the opportunity to show trailers for forthcoming PS2 games such as Dirge of Cerberus: Final Fantasy VII, Dragon Ball Z Sparking!, Shin Onimusha: Dawn of Dreams, Resident Evil 4, Tales of Legendia, Shadow of the Colossus and Metal Gear Solid 3: Subsistence.

King of Fighters Neowave - PS2

Posted By: wraggster

News from <a href="http://www.lik-sang.com/news.php?artc=3663&&lsaid=219793" target="_blank" >Lik Sang</a>

After the NeoGeo system and King of Fighters series were inseparable for 10 years, SNK finally ushered in the new high powered Atomiswave hardware from Sammy with King of Fighters Neowave, and this week the PS2 edition was released. Based on the KOF 2002 game engine, fans of that title and the '98 release will feel right at home here. Far beyond a simple 'remake' however, various improvements and major changes have been made, such as a new "gauge system". This features 3 different gauge types, Super Cancel, Guard Break, and MAX2. MAX2 replaces the original MAX mode, which was removed here.

Character wise, making a come back from KOF 98 and 2000, Shingo, King, Jhun and Saisyu have all returned, giving the game a roaster of over 36 fighters. Five secret characters await unlocking too, including Angel, May Lee, Seth, Rugal, and Kusanagi. The PS2 release has received many additions beyond the arcade hit, such as an extra eight remixed backgrounds, an arranged soundtrack and more. Pre-orders are already winging their way around the world, and we're accepting new orders for KOF Neowave right now.

San Andreas banned down under!

Posted By: wraggster

In the wake of the "Hot Coffee" scandal, debate is raging in the United States on whether to regulate the sale of sexually explicit and/or violent games. However, there is no such discussion in Australia, where the government's Office of Film and Literature Classification can ban games outright.

And banned it has, forbidding sales of Leisure Suit Larry: Magna Cum Laude, BMX XXX, and Manhunt in the past. While a heavily edited version of Grand Theft Auto: Vice City was approved by the OFLC in 2002, Grand Theft Auto III was banned in Australia when it was released in 2001.

Today, that same fate befell its successor, Grand Theft Auto: San Andreas. Though it has been on sale in the antipodean nation for months, recent revelations about the Hot Coffee sex minigames hidden in the game's code prompted the OFLC to revoke the game's original MA15+ classification, which lets it be purchase by persons aged 15 and over. It received the classification for "Medium level animated violence, Medium level coarse language."

"Businesses that sell or hire computer games should remove existing stocks of this game from their shelves immediately," said Des Clark, director of the OFLC. "Parents are strongly advised to exercise caution in allowing children continued access to the game, particularly if they might have access to the 'Hot Coffee' modification."
