Krakatos has posted a new version of the PS2 emu for Windows and new plugins too:
OK, new beta posted. This is mainly a bugfix release for beta 599, to solve the most serious bugs. Still Vtlb only, Vuskip still doesn't work. I am removing 599 since as said this is a bugfix release.
Also, while I'm at it, I added to the first posts the plugins included into the playground svn as they are today. Don't expect great improvements, but you may as well use them. Be sure to reconfigure from scratch, delete the ini files. The plugins included are:
Linuzappz
Zerogs
Spu2ghz
Zerospu
Changelog since beta 599:
- major bugfix from rev 595. Solves Mgs3 crash and bios problems, may have been responsible for other quirky behaviours
- some hackfixes for Fatal Frame 1
- removed a typo in memory.cpp
- a few small optimizations tweaks
- a few small vumicro changes
Known issues:
Vuskip is still broken, frameskip may be quirky but seems fine for now

Dasda just released his version of a PUP file unpacker, the un_pup 1.0. It's coded in C and licensed under the GNU GPL v3.
Just a small command-line application I hacked together, all it does is output information and properly extract Update Packages. I did this mainly because of my research, and this one can easily be compiled on almost any platform where GCC has been ported. It's released under GPLv3.
PS. I know the code is kinda dirty and I'm calling multiple functions twice, but it's good and it handles errors (except for the strcmp, sch!). Expect a cleaned up version later, version 1.1. ;-)

Buck up, Sony. Sure, the PS3 might be taking on water in stormy seas and you're facing a fairly dramatic corporate shake-up, but at least you can take solace in the fact that you done real good with the PS2. Heck, you said so yourself today, announcing that 50 million of them have been sold in North America.
The future of last generation's best-performing console also looks bright, with new releases in the pipeline for 2009 -- and possibly beyond. Even SCEA's hardware marketing head, John Koller, said, "We don't intend on discarding the system anytime soon." (And with a return of backwards-compatibility on PS3 via software emulation still but a rumor, we don't imagine many PS2 owners will be discarding the system anytime soon, either.)

2009 marks year #9 for Sony's aging PlayStation 2. Although hardcore gaming enthusiasts have largely moved on to current generation consoles, the system is still "important" to Sony's business model. With 50 million units sold in North America, it's clear why Sony will continue supporting the platform. John Koller, director of hardware marketing at SCEA, told Gamasutra that "the only way to kill the PS2 business is to stop supporting it." Koller claims that 25% of software sales in 2008 were on Sony's last-gen system.
Publishers are unlikely to ignore the sizable PS2 audience, and Koller agrees. "With the lineup for 2009 and 2010, the PS2 is not going away anytime soon." A quick glance at the PS2 release list shows dozens of games planned for the year, although most are licensed movie and sports games. 2009 releases include titles like SingStar, Guitar Hero: Metallica, Ghostbusters, Madden and The Beatles.
Sony will undoubtedly want the success of PS2 to continue as long as possible. With PS3 systems still losing money on each unit sold, the "positive margins" of the PlayStation 2 will help the manufacturer's bottom line. With PS2 sales still going strong, Koller insists a price drop is not coming any time soon. "It's a significant financial contributor for us and it sells very well at $129.99. We're comfortable with the current price."

A New release of the elf launcher has occured today, heres whats new:
LaunchELF v4.33 (2009.01.12)
-Raised a debug constant which limited v4.32 USB_mass drives to 4 instead of 10
-Added a horizontal offset to the "About uLE" display
LaunchELF v4.32 (2009.01.11)
-Upgraded USBHDFSD to SVN rev 1503 by radad, which cures the bug causing large-file corruption in the previous uLE release, and also adds support for multiple partitions (each accessed as a separate mass?: drive) and extends the hotplugging limits (max 5 simultaneous devices with a total of max 10 partitions). Exceeding the limits will cause no harm, but the additional devices/partitions will not be accessible.
-Upgraded USBD to SVN rev 1494 by radad, making uLE "mass:" identical to that of old applications when using multiple USB drives in uLE.
-Improved MISC/PS2Disc subprogram to support launch of either DVD-Video disc or ESR-patched disc (but might not recognize disc type if a modchip is active)
-Added "ESR elf" entry to "Startup Settings..." configuration menu
NB: If no ESR elf has been configured a default of "mc:/BOOT/ESR.ELF" is used

StreetskaterFU the very well known PS3 Hacker posted this on his blog:
As I didn't found a good Linux USB logger I coded a very very simple one myself. It logs the USB traffic of every port. To run the application you need atleast kernel version 2.6.11. To start the program go to the terminal, change to the folder the "usblogger" is in and enter: "sudo ./usblogger". It won't run without root privileges. Don't try to run this under Windows or Mac, its Linux-only!
The idea behind was an easy way to log any USB actions of for example the gameos, or the PSP under Linux. To sniff gameos USB you will need a USB cable with 2 male sides. Plug it in PS3 and PC and start the logger on PC.
Here a few ideas what to test:
- PS3 USB at PS3 boot sequence
- PS3 USB to PC fake external HDD
- PSP USB at PSN Store downloads
- etc.
#UPDATE:
----------------------------------
Changelog 0.5:
- code clean up
- less cpu power need

Next up, we have an updated uLaunchELF by dlanor and E P!
We'll do a direct quote of the changes because no one explains it better than they do.
Quote:
LaunchELF v4.31 (2009.01.04)
-Added new "MISC/About uLE" subprogram, displaying a program credits screen
-Enhanced FileBrowser to support multiple hotplugged USB mass drives
-Upgraded usbhdfsd to SVN rev 1490 by radad, for multiple USB drive support. Note that this may require running the new "setup.sh" script, for those who wish to compile uLE themselves. (Or use the new script "upgrade_usbhdfsd.sh".)
-Fixed various issues with TextEditor (inability to insert CRLF at CRLF etc)
-Fixed a partition unmounting issue, that sometimes caused non-fatal failure of the TextEditor to show proper partition contents when browsing for a text file

First up we'll catch you up to speed with ffgriever's In Game Reset! He's now updated it to work with HDL. Well, at least to an extent for now. But he's done what no one else has, given regular users the ability to soft reset games back to the HDL menu without getting out of their chairs.
Here's a bit of his changes:
Quote:
Updated 04 January 2009:
IGR for HDLoader rev2.
DNAS games should work now
Fixed some games that were giving blue screen (eg. ico)
Fixed some games that were giving bsods
Fixed some games that didn't react to combo press at all
Everything should be more stable
New method of unhooking hdloader
Name of hdloader file has been changed to "HDLOADER.ELF", as suggested by dlanor.
Out of these, only the last one (new unhook method) can cause some problems. I tested it on v7 and v10 only.
BTW. HDLoader doesn't unhook itself properly even in mode 3. That's why proper unhooking has to be done by IGR even when mode 3 is enabled. But fortunately we always have unchanged copy of kernel in rom . So I'm just copying whatever I have to.

Winter weather and cabin fever can lead to some strange behavior. Take this tale of two thirtysomething Wisconsin brothers for instance. Apparently, a fight over a PS2 controller lead to punching, choking and stabbing.
According to the Waukesha Police, the fight started over an argument about who's turn it was to play the (unidentified) game. Eventually, the fight escalated when one brother tried to choke the other out. In retaliation, he pulled an knife and slashed at his assailant. The knife was wrestled out of his hands and plunged into his chest. In a panic, the brother who did the stabbin' fled the scene and walked to the hospital—suffering severe frostbite on his hands as a result.
The injuries sustained were not life threatening, but police are recommending that charges be brought up against both brothers. They are also speaking with Santa Claus about the possibility of placing his boot squarely and firmly into their asses.
